What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that are essential to many key functions in the body. They include Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphate, and Bicarbonate. These minerals form an electrical charge in the body that are vital for a variety of metabolic processes. Electrolytes regulate proper nerve and muscle function, maintain optimal PH levels, and are best known for their role in hydration.

Electrolytes help to balance the water inside and outside of your cells to maintain fluid balance and support optimal health. They can become imbalanced if you are sweating, exposed to excessive heat, drink alcohol, are vomiting or have diarrhea, or not getting enough minerals through diet alone. Symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance include: Fatigue, headache, nausea, blood pressure changes, muscle cramps, low energy, and simply not feeling well.

Plain water alone does not replenish electrolytes and traditional sports drinks contain way too much sugar and not enough minerals! Good dietary sources for electrolytes include coconut water, fruits, veggies, dairy products, nuts and seeds. There are also electrolyte powders and drinks that are effective supplements to support your dietary needs. We love Endura, Hydrate, and Nooma or making a quick and easy electrolyte drink yourself!
